  • Allamuchy Mountain State Park
    800 Willow Grove Street, Hackettstown 908-852-3790
    Located in the southern section of Sussex County, the Stephens sections comprised of 222 acres out of the whole of 7,101 acres.  Visitors can picnic, camp, fish, and hike in the area, which includes more than a mile of the Musconetcong River
  • High Point State Park
    1480 Route 23, Sussex 973-875-4800
    Consisting of over 14,000 acres, High Point State Park is one of largest in the county.  It offers a wide variety of activates during the year including cross-country skiing, ice-skating, canoeing, fishing, boating, and camping.  Also, a portion of the Appalachian Trail is located in the park.
  • Hopatcong State Park
    Lakeside Boulevard, Laning 973-398-7010
    Hopatcong State Park is comprised of 113 acres of land at the southwestern edge of Lake Hopatcong, which is used for boating, fishing, and swimming.  Winter months bring such activities as snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice-skating, ice boating, ice sailing, and sledding.
  • Kittatinny Valley State Park

    The newest of the New Jersey state parks, Kittatinny Valley State Park is comprised of 1,700 acres and is a haven for hikers.  Trails such as the Sussex Branch Trail (which is also permits mountain biking, cross-county skiing, horseback riding, and dog sledding) and the Paulinskill Valley Trail travel through rural landscapes, rich forests, and quaint towns of the county.
  • Stokes State Forest

    The 15,735-acre park includes mountain ridges, rich farmlands, and undeveloped forests.  Visitors can participate in a number of activities, including hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, picnicking, swimming boating, canoeing, fishing, ice-skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.  Also, they can take pleasure in the swift waters and cliffs of the Tillman Ravine.
  • Swartswood State Park

    Swartswood Lake, located in Swartswood State Park, is a glacial lake that provides some of the best trout fishing in the region.  The lake boast safe, clean water and provides opportunities for summer recreation such as fishing, sailing, and swimming.  Other activities available include seasonal hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, camping, cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, and ice boating.
  • Wawayanda State Park

    Waywayanda State Park boasts a 20-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail among its features.  The park offers excellent hiking and photographic opportunities.  The Waywayanda Swamp Natural Area is home to such species as the red-shouldered hawk, barred owl, and great blue heron.  Other activities include swimming, boating, canoeing, cross-country skiing, ice-skating and snowmobiling.
  • Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
    376 Route 284, Sussex 973-702-7266
    Since 1990, the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge has been haven for over 225 species of birds, as well as a variety of fish and wildlife.  The refuge has hiking rails and many fishing access points.  The river flows north through Sussex County, providing a migratory and nesting habitat 21 species of waterfowl.  Canoeing and kayaking are permitted, and a journey down the river is recommended as the best way to see the sights.
  • Wild life Management Areas
    Wildlife Management Areas are multiple-use public lands administered by the NJ Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife.  They are fascinating spots for the avid bird-watcher, animal lover and photographer.  Most permit cross-country skiing, hiking, mountain biking, picnicking, swimming, and camping.
