Although only a single square mile in area, Stanhope is the third most densely populated municipality in Sussex County.  The borough is at the southern tip of the county, with easy access to Interstate 80.  Primarily a residential community, Stanhope is also home to some small industrial facilities and businesses along Route 206.

There are several historical buildings in the borough, dating from the early days when the Morris Canal passed through the community.  During the 19th century,  Stanhope was one of NJ's leading  iron producers.   Iron ore was pulled from the mines surrounding the borough and converted into pig iron in three blast furnaces on Main Street.

Stanhope borders on Lake Musconetcong, which offers a beachfront and boat ramp.
