The historic county seat that was a center of commerce before the Civil War remains so today.

Centered on a park and downtown square at the intersection of routes 94 and 206, the town's primary business is along Spring Street, where a $1 million revitalization project was recently completed.

County administration and court buildings, including the historic main courthouse, dominate much of the downtown area, with some offices occupying historic Victorian and turn-of-the-century homes throughout the district.

Newton's population of 7,800 in 3.3 square miles makes it one of the most densely populated towns in the county.  The town offers residents athletic fields, a roller skating area and a swimming pool at Memory Park.  Ice skating as also available at Summit Avenue Park.  Also within the town's borders are Newton Memorial Hospital and Sussex County Community College.
