Thomas Lawrence, on of the earliest settlers in the area, established a post office in what is now Hamburg in 1795. The mile square borough was later named for the hambury Iron Works.  Centrally located at the intersection of routes 23 and 94, it's location has played a large part in its rapid growth.  The town is only a short drive to the ski areas of Vernon, the county seat of Newton and nearby golf resorts.

Notable history and/or features: “The Children’s Town,” as Hamburg is called, is home to Gingerbread Castle. This fairy tale castle theme castle was a popular children's landmark since the 1930's.  It is currently being renovated and will open again soon.
